Tabor City residents may sign up next week for mosquito prevention spraying. Columbus County Health Department will conduct the work through the town, charging at least 1.00 for four rooms and 0.25 for each additional room, with names filed with Town Clerk Percy Brown.
D. H. Kenny Jordan, a member of the Columbus County AAA committee since 1933, resigned his post and the resignation was accepted by the State AAA committee. Jordan is a candidate for the county commissioners in the upcoming Democratic primary. Bill Hooks called Jordan’s contributions invaluable to the farmers and the AAA program.
Mount Tabor Baptist Church will observe May 9 as Family Day. Pastor P. C. Gantt announced the event urging the entire family to attend worship together.
Daniel Hallman a Charleston South Carolina native arrived in Taboy City this week to assume duties as watchmaker at Reece's Jewelry. He is married with one child and his family remains in Charleston for the present.
Happy Sam Fowler of Tabor City announced a radio program on WDSC Dillon starting next Monday morning. The show will air from 6 30 to 7 o clock Monday through Saturday and be sponsored by several local merchants.
Arrangements for a Tabor City Rotary club Ladies Night are complete and the event will be held Monday night May 10 at Little Pee Dee Lodge.
On J P Derham’s birthday, the Derham family funded a memorial library at Green Sea high school. The collection includes World Books, Carl Sandburg Lincoln volumes, R E Lee by Freeman, a Pulitzer work, The March of Time by Adams, yearly additions, and about 200 fiction titles. Derham, called the father of Horry County schools, helped pass the bill establishing local schools.
The sheriff's office investigated a robbery at a combination service station residence about six miles from Tabor City toward Guideway near the South Carolina line. Thieves entered Sunday night and took a strong box with valuable papers and about $200 in cash from Marshall Cox's business.
Thirty two Firestone dealers from 15 counties held a district meeting Friday night at Lakeside Inn. The meeting was conducted by G. F. Cooper Jr and Joe Canady of Charlotte and Morris F. Canady of Wilmington.
A Sunday School enlargement campaign will be held at Mount Tabor Baptist Church May 3 through 7. Rev. John T. Biddle, associational missionary of the Randolph Baptist Association, will conduct classes for Sunday School teachers and officers and others interested in Sunday School work.
R G Ayers of Tabor City Cold Storage was in Winston Salem for several days last week attending a meeting of the North Carolina Cold Storage Locker association.
Rob Gore of Vinegar Hill shot seven large snakes that invaded his front yard on Sunday morning. He killed two or three with a shotgun, then finished the job with a neighbor’s rifle. A taxi carried the snake show man away, losing his act after snakes fell from his truck earlier that day.
New Life Church hosts an all day Mother’s Day program on Sunday May 9 with on site dinner and afternoon services. Commencement activities at Tabor City High School run May 20 and 21 featuring piano recitals by Miss Carolyn Murray at 3 pm. Baccalaureate address May 23 by Rev. Ernest P. Russell of Green Sea Baptist Church. Graduation exercises May 28 with diplomas from Principal C H Pinner and seniors list for 1947 48 includes W R Burroughs Elmer Daines and many others.
The Guideway 4-H club held its regular meeting on Monday April 12. The dress revue crowned Betty Colins 1st, Carolyn Cox 2nd, and Lillian Lane 3rd. Judges were Miss Maude Butler Mrs Thurmond Butler and Mrs Dick Gore. Carolyn Cox reported for the club.
Shirley Faye Simmons five month old daughter of Mr and Mrs Walter Simmons of Clarendon Route One died Friday morning after a short illness in Murlin hospital. Funeral held Saturday at 11 at home Rev Eric Gaskill officiating. Burial in Simmons cemetery. Survived by parents two brothers Wayne Larry Dale and two sisters Lois Betty Gale.
Tabor City All-Stars meet Chadbourn All-Stars at Tabor City High School field Sunday at 3 p m. Opening game of the season the Tabor team, last year finishing first in the Lumber River league by winning nine of 11. Independents this year the squad lists Jernigan Soles Fipps Spivey Wright Wright Fowler Hughes Stanley Anderson Byrder Stevens Fowler Prince Truitt.
A religious census will be conducted Sunday May 2 in Tabor City and within two miles by workers from the local Presbyterian Methodist and Baptist churches. The survey seeks to list religious preferences of all households and should finish by 3 p.m.
Miss Alice Augustyn a native of Antwerp Belgium opens a beauty shop in the block over Meares store next to Dr G S Coxs office. She formerly worked in Antwerp and Myrtle Beach and will specialize in French and American hair styles feather cuts permanents and facials.
The WSCS of St Paul Methodist met Tuesday evening at Mrs S T Rogers home to continue a weekly study series titled Committed to Us. Mrs Grover Cox led the program with assistance from Mrs Harry Bell F F Thompson and David Kelly, with Miss Faye Rowell as soloist.
Rev H Free Surratt announces 11 am sermon Christ the Center of the Home to begin National Family Week. Sunday evening the topic is Dedication of Seed Soil and Sowers.
Tabor City principal C H Pinner proposes an annual twelve month salary for teachers based on nine months of school plus three summer months of grouped activities. He outlines remedial work, workshops, and vacation periods to maintain pay, improve methods, and keep schools active in the community.
J C Rabon of Lake Waccamaw acquires the Carolina Beauty Shoppe in Tabor City from Evangeline Bailey of Chadbourn. Mrs Rabon, with eight years in beauty parlor work, will manage and operate the shop with Daphne Spivey and Ned Butler.
The Lebanon Home Demonstration Club held its regular meeting on April 13 at Mrs. G. C. Hinson’s home. Three new members Mrs. Robert Randall Mrs. John H Ward and Mrs. Brady Ward were welcomed. Mrs. Jessie Harper led the demonstration Do I Make the Most of What I Have. Refreshments followed. Next meeting at Mrs. Frances Currie’s home.
About 379 Home Demonstration club women in Columbus County will join rural women nationwide in observing the third National Home Demonstration week starting May 28, according to Nan Ratcliff, Columbus home agent.
Miss Inez Lewis piano pupils Donna Sue Ayers and Ann Williamson traveled to Wilmington last weekend for National Piano Teachers Guild auditions and both earned high ratings. Mrs. E L Mace of Charleston visits her mother Mrs J P Derham. E H Roberts and Miss Seth Thompson are patients at Conway Hospital after recent surgeries. Rev Ernest P Russell of Green Sea Baptist Church spent Monday in Charlotte. Mr and Mrs Billy Adden and their children visited Mrs A D Lewis.
