The child was taken to Columbus County Hospital for minor cuts and bruises and was not seriously injured. Columbus County Schools will open August 20 at 8:30 a.m. Superintendent W. J. Boger Jr announced. Bus drivers and supervisors are being arranged. Jessie Irene Baxter of Cleveland County has been hired as one white supervisor for the coming term. The Tabor City faculty list is given for grades one through four.
Senator J. K. Powell said he favors the Pireway bridge and is drafting a statement to the Army in Charleston, urging approval. He noted no local protests and urged interested residents to submit views by August 28 noon. The plan shows a fixed 320 foot span with specified navigation openings.
The County Board passed orders to fight a rate increase sought by Carolina Telephone and Telegraph, operator in Tabor City and the county. A Raleigh hearing on the company’s rate request is set for September 6 at 10 A.M. Local citizens expect action as part of a broader county effort.
