Early Lawyer Thaddeus Wood of Onondaga Valley

Thaddeus M. Wood, acid-tongued early lawyer and landowner, built one of Onondaga County’s first law offices in Onondaga Valley in 1794, paired with George Hall before a split over partnership assets. A Democrat, Wood held local office as surrogate in 1800 and rose through militia ranks to brigadier general by 1815. His land holdings exceeded 1090 acres across Onondaga Valley, Manlius, Liverpool, Salina, and more, with a later legacy clouded by a complex will and substantial real estate holdings. He died January 6, 1785, survived by his wife, Siren Petty Danforth Word.
