Artillerymen in Battery A in World War I

Syracuse soldiers of Battery A First New York Artillery joined the Twenty-seventh Division after mobilization. Formed 1911 by Capt. Guido F. Verbeck, the unit trained at Plattsburg and Camp Wadsworth, later redesignated as One Hundred Fourth Artillery. They fought at Brest, Glassy Rock, and near Malbrouk Hill, using a two and a half ton M1917 gun and complex triangulation fire in support of infantry, including action near Ormont and the Mexic River, before the unit reached Crevon on November 11.

Foreign Wars Vets Posts in Syracuse Grow

Twelve hundred Syracuse residents belong to four Veterans of Foreign Wars posts in the city. The VFW roots go back to 1305 with an Albany charter. Onondaga Post formed after World War I, led by Jease Brooke, then 21 members.

Election Lines Made Woodard Boom and Post Office

Woodard a small hamlet west of Terre Hi d grew with the Symecuse and Northern Rail line opened November 9 1571 passing through on its way to Oswego The Phoenix branch later crossed the main line at Woodard triggering a local boom The community gained post office status with Allen Kinney serving as postmaster for years The railroads were later absorbed by New York Central.
