Senator Copeland lauds Mr Hearst in a wartime address stressing humanitarian care by Red Cross, international disarmament aims, and calls for a conference to end cruelty and the use of dum-dum bullets amid war zones and social distress.
A U S spokesman states America aims to stay out of war and avoid foreign alliances while strengthening sea air and land defenses. The official confirms no entangling alliances, urges pacific resolutions and arms reduction, yet reserves adequate forces to deter aggression if others rearm.
New York reports a 23 year absence ends as a man returns to work as a city watchman after being laid off. He sues for 95,000 in damages and receives compensation, while Isaacs the Borough President hails the return as a righted case.
Barcelona Mayor Hilario Salvado announced that insurgent aerial bombardment has killed or injured 3,467 people in less than a year. Most victims were women and children as the city endured 23 air attacks since February 15, 1937, with 64 houses destroyed or damaged by bombs.
In Albany on February 9, Gordon Knox Neve Fork City, a Republican, was elected to the state board of regents. Relacd B. Woodward of Rochester was re-elected. Bell received 103 votes and Woodward 117. Democratic candidate Frank C. Walker received 36 votes. four American Labor party votes went to Prefexy Fork.
Shirley LaBelle, a chorus girl, won a $2,000 settlement from Max Baer after a court case over alleged luring to a hotel room and a bet on a two grand act. The case centers on an out of court settlement citing a “two grand” amount.
In Herkimer on February 8 Mrs. Argaree Scudder the mother of John Scudder Jr testified before Police Justice George F Graces that her son acted in self defense after a quarrel with his brother Hawlette Scudder She said Hawlette was older and stronger and would not heed John when he said let us quit John Sr remained critically ill at Little Falls Hospital as the county jail awaited grand jury action in March John Jr was confined in Herkimer County jail awaiting the outcome of the case
Father James G. Daly a veteran Jesuit missionary in the Philippines has died. The death was reported by the Jesuit Philippines bureau on February 9. Daly served long in the mission and was renowned for his work with local communities.
Former Representative Jeannette Rankin of Montana urged the House Naval Affairs Committee to withhold authorization for a 390.99 million dollar naval expansion, arguing the plan raises tensions and harms economic stability. Rankin, questioned by Rep. Phillips, warned the President’s request fuels foreign policy uncertainty, while others defended or critiqued the stance as a political stance amid debates on defense and foreign policy.
A Baltimore resident who previously worked there and whose employer paid unemployment taxes may face payment of benefits being treated as Baltimore’s responsibility. The board asked which city should pay benefits when the worker becomes unemployed, noting uncertainty about Washington employment taxes. The board indicated the residence city governs eligibility, while infant workers require a general rule that to receive unemployment benefits a worker must be available for re employment at all times.
Binghamton workers face a three percent pay reduction effective February 4 in a corporate overhaul. The move follows a two to three percent slash affecting 263 salaried employees and shifts in social security contributions for many on the payroll.
