Doughnut Girl Purviance Brings Comfort to War Front

Ensign Purviance and Ensign Margaret Sheldon aided the First Division’s ammunition train at Montiers. They improvised a doughnut operation from limited rations to ease home sickness, shaping crullers and using a homemade cutter. The program expanded to 9,000 doughnuts a day at peak, then resumed civilian duties after the war.
