Branca to Start World Series Opener Against Shea

Ralph Branca 21 year old and 21 game winner will pitch the World Series opener for Brooklyn against rookie Frank Spec Shea of the Yankees. Yankees manager Burt Shotton earlier confirmed the choice after secrecy. The rookie Shea went 14 wins and five losses this season and becomes the first rookie to start a World Series game for an American League club. The Latkes started with an all rookie battery as Lawrence Berra backed up the plate. Crowd at Yankee Stadium neared 7,000 though fans were slow to fill bleacher seats. Continued on page 2.
