Lennon killer begins prison term at Attica

Mark David Chapman, 26, who pleaded guilty to the slaying of ex-Beatle John Lennon, quietly began his prison term at Attica Correctional Facility. He arrived September 22 after a 20 years to life sentence. He is in the special housing unit once used by David Berkowitz.

Daredevil Petit Arrested After Punching Theater Window

French daredevil Philippe Petit 31 was arrested after allegedly punching a box-office window at the Criterion Center when unable to pay for Prince of the City tickets with a roll of quarters. The cashier and Petit were treated for cuts at a hospital.

Old state sedan keeps Carey in Mercury fleet

ALBANY AP The governor plans to keep using two aging Mercury sedans for state business despite a recent $26,296 purchase of two Buick Electra Park Avenues. A breakdown yesterday led to Carey's unmarked State Police car ride to a Health Department visit. The Office of General Services says the Mercurys have 60,000 plus miles and are due replacement, while officials say the Buicks may be sold at the next state auto auction unless Carey changes course.

Priest leaves priesthood for Planned Parenthood

Monsignor Donald W. Trautman of the Buffalo Diocese says working for Planned Parenthood conflicts with priestly duties. Priest Ronald Silverio, on leave since 1980, will not return unless he resigns from Planned Parenthood. Silverio notes Humanae Vitae allows responsible family planning and argues for contraception as a conscience issue.
