County seeks sewer rate hike amid lake cleanup costs
Onondaga County legislators questioned a $9 per unit sewer rate increase proposed for next year citing a $26 million surplus in the Drainage and Sanitation Department. Officials say the surplus funds are needed to cover Onondaga Lake cleanup costs and potential mercury dumping lawsuits, with two-thirds of the rise earmarked for defense. The plan would lift rates to 256 per unit within the consolidated sewer district as a step toward gradual future increases.
