Strike Ends In Captive Coal Mines

The Associated Press reports 44,000 workers in captive coal mines across Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Kentucky will return to work after the National Defense Mediation Board recommended no work stoppage for 30 days, with a future three day written-notice rule. The move follows a week idle over united shop demands and dues disputes, and mediation will continue to seek a full settlement.

Dakar Reinforced As Governor Sees Big Role For Colony Forces

Pierre Boisson the French governor of Dakar told reporters the west African naval base has been reinforced for the big role colonies may play soon. He recalled the failed Free French British attempt to take Dakar and said France's armed forces are stronger now, especially in equipment, than in September 1940.

British Pilot Flies Captured Junker With Dictionary Aid

RAF ground crew chased a German five bomber at an Egyptian airdrome. A Tasmanian wing commander, using a dictionary to study Junker controls, flew the captured plane from a Libyan frontier area on three forced landings. He suffered a facial wound, used limited water and meat, salvaged oilage, received gasoline from a naval officer on leave, and finally reached base with a companion.

Engineer Prevents Disaster on Open Bridge Over Chicago River

Chicago report says a Chicago and Alton passenger engine halted nearly half its length beyond an open bridge to allow a barge to pass. The engine stopped with wheels over the edge while four sleeping cars were moved to Union Station. No injuries reported.

Former New York Magistrate Joseph Goldstein demanded Nye be arrested if he endorses Charles A. Lindbergh at a Brook lyn rally. He telephoned Mayor LaGuardia urging Nye’s arrest during Lindbergh's Des Moines address and said he will attend the America First event. Goldstein contends such an endorsement would incite riot and seeks a police escort for Nye at the speech.

Soviet Sailors Interned as Belligerents In Sweden

Sixty sailors from the Soviet battle fleet were interned as belligerents in Sweden after being picked up off the Stockholm archipelago by Swedish coastal units. They were captured while approaching the coast in small boats.
