A press aide remained silent while the famous rock act known as the world’s greatest rock n roll band rolled into town early today. Fans lined streets to greet them at dawn as a dinner of salmon minestrone and garden salad with Italian dressing awaited the group.
The Rolling Stones pitched up at Syracuse Square after a 2 a.m. arrival and occupied 60 Hilton rooms, using the top floors for their entourage. They tour America for the first time since 1981 and will play at the Carrier Dome at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday, each show expected to attract 40,000 fans.
Syracuses two daily newspapers The Herald Journal and The Post Standard dominated New York state AP writing honors claiming seven of eight first place awards. The Herald Journal added a top photography prize and multiple graphics honors while editors Stephen A. Rogers praised peer recognition at the New York State Press Association meeting in Saratoga Springs.

The union order arrives amid volunteer shortages across Onondaga County fire and ambulance squads during Emergency Medical Services Week. About 40 paid Syracuse Fire Department members volunteer as fire fighters or ambulance attendants in Onondaga communities, with many serving as chiefs or assistant chiefs. A Niagara Falls resolution contends volunteer corps hinder professional growth.
The FAA recommends expanding Hancock Airport in Syracuse as a potential larger hub for USAir or another carrier. The report names 26 airports nationwide with capacity for increased traffic, noting four New York sites Albany Buffalo Rochester and Syracuse.
Eastern Airlines, one of the first carriers serving Syracuse, will depart Hancock International Airport within days after a March strike. Sister carrier Continental will stay, while about two dozen non union ground handlers lose local jobs or transfer to other cities. Union workers remain on strike amid uncertain fate. Delta and Northwest have shown interest in Eastern facilities and space.
