The Air Force staged a world-spanning peace time air show to mark its birthday. Fifty crews executed 5,000 mile non-stop missions from Germany and Japan, simulating attacks on the United States as bomber arrivals were timed with base air shows nationwide.
A B 36 bomber crossed over Syracuse yesterday afternoon as a severe electrical storm lashed the area. Onlookers reported flashes of lightning around the giant aircraft while it pressed westward through the winds and rain. The roaring engines lingering in the overcast were from other Army Air Force planes on Day missions.
Air forces from the United States and Britain set new airlift records into the Soviet blocked city delivering 5,572 tons of coal in 24 hours ending noon and flying 895 missions. Major Richard L Johnson, a veteran of 180 missions, reportedly averaged 670.981 mph in an F-86 at Muroc Lake California, exceeding the old speed mark by 20 mph. The Syracuse fan display featured B 36, B 29 and B 17 aircraft with spectators in Hancock Field and Mattydale watching a rain canceled event.

American and British planes shattered records by flying more than 7000 tons of coal and supplies into Berlin through the Russian blockade. The Combined Air Forces completed 895 missions in 24 hours, despite fog and rain, led by Lt Gen Curtis LeMay.
In Grenoble France a deadly clash erupted as opponents disrupted Gen Charles de Gaulles political rally. One man died seventeen injured as clubs and bullets flew near a monument to France's Blue Devils. Troops intervened and de Gaulles convoy faced arson attempts amid a massive crowd.
Maj. Richard L. Johnson piloted the North American F-86 to a new world speed record of 670.981 mph at Muroc Lake California. The achievement, announced at Mitchel Field in New York, surpassed the 1947 D-558 fast-flight mark and marks a production model aircraft record.
Former U S ambassador W H Standley testified to a House subcommittee that President Roosevelt avoided the State Department code due to fears of leaks. He said Roosevelt used Navy code for secret messages to the U S embassy in Moscow to prevent disclosure. Standley noted leaks could come from disloyal personnel or a code breach by Russians or Germans.

The government canceled visas and a nationwide dragnet sought Stern Group leader Nathan Friedman Yellin, with police noting phoney letters signed by Fatherland V Frank.
Washington reports credit controls due to take effect tomorrow may depress premium prices for used cars. Dealers say they have lowered payments on new used and late model cars in anticipation of tougher terms.
