The Weather Bureau urged preliminary preparations for a hurricane along the Florida east coast from Miami northward as a massive tropical storm, winds over 140 mph, churned about 250 miles east of West Palm Beach. Warnings extended to Cape Hatteras as the center neared 26.7N, 76.2W, with winds expanding to a 400 mile diameter and the storm moving northwest at about five miles per hour.
