In the Syracuse East Side race, Democratic Legislator Timothy Rice and City Councilor Teresa McCarthy won tough primary challenges led by Black community organizers. Rice defeated Simmons 378 to 257, McCarthy beat Anderson 69 to 614. Martinez ousted Geddes Town Supervisor Manuel Martinez in a nine-year tenure shift, while Patalino Jr. won the GOP right to run for supervisor. Ann Federman won the Democratic endorsement for school board commissioner, with Eckermann and Moody among top finishers. Federman and Moody also secured Liberal lines. Eckermann carries Conservative support.
A 46 year old patient at Fort Dix was left brain dead after an unlicensed man, Abraham V. K. Asante of Bordentown, allegedly posed as a doctor and administered anesthesia during bladder tumor surgery. Asante, hired July 21, faces charges of false statements and aggravated assault with a potential 20 year prison term. Bail set at 10000 dollars.
Cynthia Pugh testified in a hushed courtroom that eight days before James Pipines 42 died he said he would leave his wife and urged her to run away with him to Key West. She tearfully said she also gave Pipines the .38 derringer used in the killing three days before his death and faced possible life in prison. She sobbed while describing her long relationship with Pipines and her role as comptroller at Central City Roofing Co while the lawyer pressed for details.
