The Education Department released a four year federal literacy study showing nearly half of the nation’s 191 million adults struggle with everyday tasks. More than 26 000 people were tested, highlighting difficulties with newspapers schedules bank forms and juror instructions.
A survey shows about 90 million adults in the United States possess only rudimentary literacy. The 21 to 25 age group tested last year scores lagged 11 to 14 points behind peers from earlier surveys, highlighting a persistent literacy shortfall across generations.
Syracuse University neuroscience professor Dr Jozef Zwistocki will accompany the exhumation and reburial of Ignacy Moscicki, former president of Poland, in Warsaw. Moscicki died in 1946. his body will be moved from a Swiss site to St. John’s Cathedral with Moscicki’s descendant Zwistocki attending with family and Polish heritage representatives.
New York Attorney General Robert Abrams announced plans to resign his post at year’s end to join Stroock & Stroock & Lavan in Newark City. Abrams, 55, said money and time with family prompted the move after a Senate loss to Alfonso D’Amato. a successor will be chosen by the state Legislature.
A senior PLO official reports a tentative mutual recognition accord with Israel has been reached. Norwegian intermediaries head to Tunisia as the PLO Executive Committee meets to approve both the recognition accord and a self rule proposal for Gaza and parts of the West Bank. Arafat plans swift moves after committee approval and potential signing in Washington next week. The PLO must renounce violence as Israel presses for a firm stance.
Raymond and Sylvia Raveglia of the Pittsburgh area won Pennsylvania's largest single prize, $521 million from the August 28 drawing. They plan to upgrade their home, support nieces and nephews, and celebrate with a family dinner at Eat'n Park. They had intended to keep news private until roofing season ended. The windfall covers a 26 year span, about $2 million per year before taxes and $1.44 million after taxes.
A former state price investigator is behind bars after a Delaware County Court sentence for perjury and tampering with evidence. Craig D. Harvey, 42, of Oneonta, received 2% to 744 years in state prison amid admissions and apologies.
