Walter J. Mahoney, Buffalo Senate majority leader and Harriman critic, urged Onondaga Republicans to guard against Tammany influence in upstate New York. Speaking at a GOP luncheon in Syracuse he denounced corruption and mob links, warning that voting for candidates aligned with such politics supports those policies.

Federal court opens a sealed indictment charging 46 defendants and 16 co conspirators in a vast narcotics ring led by Harry Stromberg. The operation imported heroin cocaine and opium from France and other countries and allegedly smuggled about 50 pounds of pure heroin valued at 3.5 million dollars. Nine suspects were taken into custody nine in New York and two elsewhere. Inspectors were allegedly corrupted to help the smuggling network.

George E. Ferner halted his California trip in Dover Ohio after selling a 1938 car to pay a $55 fine for driving without a license.
National Guard units called by Arkansas governor Faubus blocked Black students from entering Little Rock Central High School defying federal court orders. About 200 troopers repelled repeated attempts by a Black girl to enter as white spectators urged them on. Other Black students faced similar barriers at area schools while officials weighed desegregation actions and federal responses.
Syracuse Air National Guard pilot Lt. Gillis A. Charlebois died when his F 94 jet went into a spin and crashed near Amboy Center Oswego County. Col. Curtis Irwin identified the 27 year old husband of Barbara Charlebois as the victim. Capt. Edgar Pritchard was flying with him during aerobatics at about 15 000 feet. A pall of smoke marked the impact and fire crews were alerted.

He testified before the Interdepartmental Committee on Farm and Food Processing Labor, presenting a five point plan for reforms including guaranteed hours and weekly wage payments by labor contractors.
New York wholesale food prices as measured by the Dun and Bradstreet Index remained steady at 6.32 this week, 4.5 percent above the 6.05 level a year ago. The index nears the 1957 high of 6.39 and reflects total wholesale cost for one pound of 31 common foods.

In Barnesville Oklahoma the nation’s first pay television program aired from the Lyric Theater. About 300 homes paid 9.50 a month to receive 13 first run and 13 re runs of Pajama Game and Mississippi Gambler. Projectors and wires carried the telemovie to living rooms from 1 PM to midnight with continuous showings and brief musical interludes.
In Richmond Virginia UP dispatch a hunter named Bill Jordan suffered a gunshot wound to the heel when a wounded duck exploded after a .22 cartridge fired from the bird in his pocket. The incident occurred during a hunting trip and the duck caused the injury.
President Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower arrived at Quonset Naval Air Station for a delayed Newport vacation lasting about a month. A bipartisan welcome was led by Gov. Dennis J. Roberts as the couple landed after leaving Washington.
Final tabulation shows at least 445 people killed in traffic accidents during the Labor Day weekend exceeding the NSC estimate of 420. The toll also tops last year’s 435 but remains below the record 461 set in 1951.
Herbert Pulitzer age 61, last surviving son of publisher Joseph Pulitzer, dies in Paris at the American Hospital. The cause of death is not immediately disclosed.
Onondaga County projects a probable increase of at least $1 million over the 1957 budget of $21 63 021. The 1958 basic tax rate last year was $17 76 per thousand. Departments have not yet submitted estimates to County Auditor Carl Merkelein, delaying final totals. New items may include federal social security and permanent voter registration costs.
Syracuse officials project a possible tax rate increase of about 2.50 per 1 000 of assessed value as the budget is prepared. The rise stems from Education Board funding requests, salary costs, debt service and the city share of the Social Security program. Financing via short term notes could reduce the increase to about 1 50.

A 14 year old, Michael Matacchiero Jr. of Albany, drowned while swimming near Pulaski in Lake Ontario. He was visiting his grandfather Michael Brown and joined a neighbor's children at a picnic when he lost footing in undertow. State Police and Coast Guard scoured choppy waters as winds whipped the lake.
