The National Weather Service expects mostly cloudy conditions with a few showers and a possible thunderstorm. Rain may be heavy at times with a low around 80 tonight and a high near 70 tomorrow. Southeast winds 5 to 15 mph. Rain chances about 70 percent through tomorrow.
Federal and local authorities rounded up 21 people and seized up to five tons of marijuana plus a cabin cruiser and a trawler. Suspects loaded marijuana bases from the Applied Times at Sammy's Beach using inflatable boats. Additional boats and a freighter were spotted waiting to unload. Police, Coast Guard, DEA and Customs officials conducted arrests. three to five more suspects were taken into custody. Albany reported nightly numbers game draw at 969.
A new boat buyer reports chronic trouble with the vessels and says he is repeatedly bailing them out. The man says the four boats are tied to a Chrysler purchase and vows to fix the ongoing issues.
Day five of the 1081 State Fair saw rain force midway curtailment and push crowds into exhibition halls. Beach Boys drew 14,713 at a near sellout grandstand show, while others shifted from outdoor to indoor venues. Charlie Daniels Band tickets top 12,500 as showers loom and attendance trails last year.
Former Transportation Commissioner Raymond Storto, 63, pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of illegal political assessments. He was fined $1,000 by State Supreme Court Justice Lyman H. Smith. The case involves Citizens for Good City Government, a Democratic committee aiding Mayor Lee Alexander’s re election bid.

He defended wage negotiation rights, noted public employees can’t strike, and blamed Wall Street for stock swings before Oct. 1. Reagan warned the Soviets on arms reduction and said a new chip is on the table.

Taxable interest applies to bonus-linked certificates, while isolated plans can retain tax exemption. Banks including Chase Manhattan amended offers to avoid penalties, proposing 17 percent repurchase terms to keep savers while preserving exemptions.
