An automobile and a truck collided on Rock Cut road near Syracuse. vision was hindered by smoke from a dump. Mrs. Winifred Gorman of Fabius was seriously injured. In Ogallala Nebraska a truck lost control at a downtown corner causing a mess.
John Boettiger fifty former son in law of President Roosevelt plunged to his death from a seventh floor window of a Manhattan hotel. Police said he had been in a low spirits state for days and was under care of a male nurse. He awakened, asked for the window to be opened wide and then jumped to the sidewalk. Boettiger a lifelong newspaper man was the divorced husband of Anna Roosevelt Dall and had worked as a political reporter for the Chicago Tribune before becoming publisher of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. The report notes romance with the Roosevelt family and his wartime duties.
Henry D. Sherwood, acting NY State Grange master, warns of a rush to socialism and danger to personal liberties. He attacks Communism and dole policies, condemns welfare costs and subsidies, and opposes federal control of farm production. Concluded on Page 22.
Mrs. Charles Ireland of 204 Nichols Jr. thought she had struck a boy after a truck passed on S Salina Street at 10:30 AM. A large dummy fell from the truck and lay in the road, prompting brakes. The driver returned to collect the dummy, and no one was hurt. The muffler on her car was damaged by the dummy.

The final official voter registration for the November 7 election stands at 6,443,492 after receipt of district figures from Herkimer County. New York City registration totals 2,806,448.
Harold L. Ickes charged Gov. Thomas E. Dewey with a tumbling "diaper" as he campaigned for the Liberal Party in New York. He claimed Dewey’s early candidacy remarks show naivete and warned the Democrat Liberal alliance has Dewey on the brink of retirement behind a screen.
The City continues dumping sewage into Lakeland despite Geddes Town Board prohibiting the practice. Public Works Commissioner Frank F. Harmon says the plant pumps sewage to Lakeland with no orders to stop. Corporation counsel George L. Richardson says a decision will be made soon.
The Census Bureau reported hotels in the United States earned 2 173 000 000 in 1948, a 152 percent rise over prewar 1939 levels, signaling a strong postwar rebound in travel and lodging demand.
King George VI opened a new session in London amid pageantry and a pledge to advance rearmament. He announced government actions to nationalize sugar, regulate production and prices, extend leases, develop civil defense, and boost home food production, as Attlee’s government faces a possible election and ongoing international tensions.
Weatherman Andrew Keller reports southerly winds preserving warm Indian Summer for several days. Five day forecast shows temperatures about six to eight degrees above normal with light showers Friday. Yesterday the high reached 72 with a 15 degree above normal average. today and tomorrow stay warm with highs near 73 and a 48 degree low. East of the Rockies sees 20 to 40 degrees above normal. New York State readings in the 70s while Midwest cites 80s and 90s.
Twenty five armed bandits netted more than 80,000 pesos in daylight raids on a pay car and a passenger train near Manila. Three railroad employees were killed and three wounded. The criminal action targeted transportation and infrastructure, signaling a bold robbery in the region.
In Toronto two gunmen robbed the State Theater manager and cashier, escaped with $600 while the word State penitentiary flashed on the screen, as reported by United Press.
National Guard air and ground forces attacked Jayuya and Utuado in Puerto Rico after rebels seized ten centers in a revolt described as the island’s worst. Authorities said 28 people were dead and 22 wounded while about 600 Nationalists held the two towns 50 miles from San Juan and 6 miles apart. Eight fighter planes strafed the towns before the ground assault.
A political clash in the west coast town of Tiquisate left 50 injured as stones and guns were used. Guatemala's President Juan Jose Arevalo's six-year term ends next March with a successor to be elected November 10 and 11.

A U S tank tipped column led by Maj. Gen. John H. Church advanced up Korea’s northwest coast toward Sinuiju near the Manchurian frontier. The 21st Regiment of the 24th Division, under Col. Richard Stevens, drove through Sonchon and beyond, about 25 miles from Sinuiju as UN forces resumed a hard push toward the Yalu River. The offensive followed renewed Allied momentum after earlier setbacks near Hamhung and across the front.
Governor Dewey commented on publisher Frank Gannett breaking with him calling it a free country and that everyone is entitled to his own opinion in New York City. Cannel, leader of a chain with over 500000 daily readers in Upstate New York, announced he would not vote for Dewey or support his reelection bid. Gannett, in a Rochester Times Union editorial, objected to the methods used to gain the gubernatorial nomination.
Gannett, longtime Republican and former Dewey confidant, says he will not vote Democratic and calls reports he ordered papers to back Democratic nominee Walter A. Lynch a lie. Lynch accuses Dewey of using third degree pressure to push Hanley from the gubernatorial race, clearing the path for Dewey’s renomination as Rochester Times Union backs the state ticket.
