Patrick Daun an 18 month old was trapped by a kitchen gas pipe in his home as fire department police and an ambulance responded. Firemen freed him by lifting him several feet to free the wedged foot after about half an hour of effort led by his cries.
Four men died in a head on collision between Boston and Maine and Canadian Pacific trains in Newbury Vermont. Two engineers and two firemen were killed. several other people were injured and treated on site. The crash derailed both engines and a mail baggage and milk car.
A guerrilla mine destroyed Gen. James A. Van Fleet’s personal plane on landing at Florina Airport. He was not aboard. five Americans and the Greek corps commander escaped injury while the aircraft burned.
A tropical storm with winds up to 75 mph at its center lies about 275 miles northwest of Iwo Jima, moving generally northward. Center winds have fluctuated between 65 and 75 mph over the past two days.

A two year old shepherd collie named Johan Jacobsen, left in Oslo, Norway, returns to Dunellen New Jersey after being found wandering on Long Island New York. The dog’s collar tag with Jacobsen’s name and hometown led responders to his owner. Jacobsen had left the dog with friends in Oslo when he returned to the United States last spring. A Norway man reported seeing the collie on a plane bound for America and hoped the tag would guide its return.
A four story brick apartment building on Chicago’s South Side burned killing four residents. About 100 occupants escaped in sleeping clothes, 25 were rescued by firefighters via the building and fire escapes.
State Guard units moved into Loudon County after Gov. Jim McCord ordered action amid a threatened mob. The crisis followed the death of hillbilly singer Ray Brewster in a traffic crash near Loudon, with the sheriff and a deputy charged in connection to the incident.
The liberal paper Vima reports an unconfirmed claim that Communist rebel leader Markos Vafiades parachuted into the Pelo ponnesus area on Mount Parnon where guerrillas are said to have headquarters.
