Walter Winchell letters roast Rosie for alleged treasonous broadcasts from Radio Tokyo and praise Ilse Koch while accusing her of seeking a whitewash. He cites Col Mori testimony on psychological warfare and recalls Tokyo broadcasts to US Marines. Concluded on Page 10.
The Guth Building fire at 130-132 E Genesee St caused a $100000 loss and a second floor horseroom discovery. Mayor Costello says horserooms remain closed and Police Chief Kinney will wait on arson squad reports before a probe. Acting Detective Cook will not mention the horseroom in the report. The Civic Interest Committee reports it is reviewing the matter.
Lenore Shanhouse a 19 year old student from Smith College blamed a telephone operator for sparking rumors she had been kidnapped. She arrived in Syracuse from Montreal en route to Washington after leaving Northampton Massachusetts campus Monday. She said she left without explanation and did not sleep or eat during the three day period.
The U S Coast Guard reported a gasoline laden barge aground on rocks one mile west of Braddock's Point Light in Lake Ontario. A Toronto tug was summoned to the scene while the vessel remains on standby.
President Truman told a Providence crowd that Dewey is on the run and the Republican dream of victory is vanishing. He claimed Massachusetts will vote Democratic by at least 100,000 and predicted national polls would misfire as he campaigned in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. He said Republicans dare not reveal where their candidate stands.
NYC ends a two day bus strike as 8,500 Transport Workers Union members return to work on seven private lines. About 3.5 million passengers regain service with schedules normal. The vote to end the walkout was 2,014 to 566.
A Seattle resident temporarily in San Francisco requested his absentee ballot. Voter registration clerks initially hesitated but mailed the man the ballot after determining the proper procedure.
An American court in Merneberg sentenced 11 German generals to three years to life for World War II atrocities after a nine month trial. Two defendants, Hugo Sperrle and Otto Schniewind, were acquitted. Walther Warlimont and Hermann Reinecke received life terms. Wilhelm von Leeb got three years and is released due to time already served. All defendants had time served credited, and the panel acquitted on the broader charge of plotting to start the war.
John Foster Dulles will fly to Sweden Norway and Denmark next weekend for a quick look at the international situation. The trip aims to assess regional concerns amid ongoing global developments.
The Soviet army paper Taegliche Rundschau says Russia will reject the Western plan for a private Berlin settlement. It calls the small-nation compromise pushed in the Security Council dictated by the United States and unacceptable to Russia.

The Board on Geographic Names approved Bumpass Hell as the official name for the hot springs in Lassen Volcanic National Park after Park Service support. Residents see the term as colorful, not stigmatic, and the springs were linked to explorer Kendall van Hook Bumpass.
Washington officials viewed Josef Stalin's accusation that the United States Britain and France seek war as reiterating Soviet propaganda. The State Department gave no official comment while a congressman returning from Europe called the speech worrying over Communist gains. The Mississippi judge in a Vicksburg trial quipped that a man may contradict himself without being a liar. He recounted nearly swearing he had his watch, then recalling he left it home. His wife later said she gave the watch to the first man who called for it.
Local fog in the Syracuse area delayed four airline transports at Municipal Airport today with holds ranging from 10 to 75 minutes. One plane from New York City to Buffalo circled 40 minutes while another Boston to Buffalo held 75 minutes.
