Conservatives blast plan to borrow in New York

Albany conservatives call the proposed constitutional amendment to curb borrowing a political trick. They accuse lawmakers of fiscal overreach, spending like during Cuomo years, and say the measure will burden taxpayers. The group launched a $30,000 statewide ad buy through Long Island, Albany, Buffalo, Watertown, Rochester, and other markets to oppose the ballot question. Proponents led by state Comptroller Carl McCall argue the cap improves long term fiscal health and credit rating agencies cite high debt as a rating factor. The ad campaign marks the first statewide push by opponents of the measure.
