Bomber Crew Rescued After Daring New Guinea Mission
An American Army bomber crew bombed a Japanese ship and helped down five fighters, then made a perilous night crash in two feet of water off New Guinea. Only Corp. Michael R. Andrade was injured. Captain Harry J. Hawthorne earned the Silver Star. The nine men were later rescued and returned to base with natives aiding their crew.
