Reports say guns fired at planes during an air raid alarm in Nancy lasting from 10:76 to 14S A M. BST today. Planes were shot at high altitude but alarm ended without an air attack. Nancy lies about 70 miles west of the Rhine frontier area.

Herbert John Davis, Cornell English professor, named president of Smith College succeeding William Alvin Neilson who retired last June. Mrs. Draft Wy Mortem remains acting president. Davis, from Northaminton Massachusetts, will assume duties soon as trustees appoint the new head.

A Nome area fire destroyed a log cabin last night killing two children and severely injuring their mother who dragged an infant to safety. The rescued child, barely survived, and the mother suffered burns. Names listed as two and four years old.
