Bankruptcy clerk’s lavish spending sparks scrutiny
George Ray, a clerk for the federal courts in the Syracuse area, faced bankruptcy while living lavishly on a $112,000 salary and $15,000 in bonuses. American Express claims Ray charged about $7,000 in luxury items knowing he would file for bankruptcy, including travel lodging and car rentals, with disputes over a December $4,800 payment and a January Avis rental. Ray says expenses were mischarged business costs or personal errors and that he has since been promoted to a key position in Washington D.C.

Onondaga Valley History Sparks Town Board Debate
A reader's letter condemns the Onondaga Town Board for approving the demolition of the 1847 Ambrose Hie home in Nedrow to make way for a no frills Aldi store. The writer cites loss of history, local landmarks, and warns of empty downtowns as the Valley's identity fades, praising Mary Ryan for dissenting. In Skaneateles, residents show courtesy to visitors with a parking meter courtesy fund started in 1992, supported by donations averaging 177 dollars, and overseen by deputy village clerk Patty Couch.
