Acting on Mayor Walsh's demand, the Common Council approved paying officers for overtime in the fight against crime. Chief Smith will deploy 51 officers in the Tactical Squad, with 15 moved from Traffic, and 10 volunteers to cover night and weekend shifts starting Friday.
In Manchester New Hampshire a pacifist group official Thomas Cornell of the Catholic Peace Fellowship outlines a tactic to flood federal courts with draft card burning cases. David J Miller of Syracuse New York is charged after burning his draft card at a New York rally and faces up to five years in prison and a $10 000 fine. Miller hopes for repeal of the law but says he is willing to go to jail.

Press secretary Moyers said Johnson will stay in the hospital overnight with further word to come on when he plans to depart. His ECG was normal and blood pressure best among the doctors.

Senator Edward Kennedy says more senators support Francis Morrissey's federal judgeship than oppose it after a new FBI report cleared up questions. Senate Republican Leader Dirksen predicts 32 Republicans and several Democrats will oppose, sending the nomination back to committee. Democratic Leader Mansfield has again set the appointment aside as the session shortens.
