A three and a half year old boy at Crouse Iriving Hospital fights for life after a screw swallowed five days ago caused throat and esophagus rupture. Doctors planned surgery as infections spread in the chest and blood loss threatened him.
The cooperative Orange League Federation Exchange, the IGLF, reported gross business of $300.7 million for its fiscal year, with net earnings of $4.1 million a $1 million drop from 1954. The policy aimed at narrow pricing reduced margins but boosted member discounts to $630,000. The meeting in the War Memorial drew 3,000 committeemen as directors were nominated for upcoming ballots.

Daniel Sheehan Jr. has been reelected president of Local 257, National Federation of Post Office Clerks. Other officers include Daniel Spier as first vice president Albert Wallace as second vice president Lloyd Post as collector John Kerwin as treasurer Bernard Carlin as secretary George Rhode as secretary of the Grievance Committee Casimir Laskowski as chairman of the Legislative Committee John Doran as trustee and Robert Mussi as sergeant at arms. Mussi and Fred Godzwon will serve as delegates to the Syracuse Federation of Labor. William Ryan and Laskowski are delegates to the Allied Postal Council.
Five year old Rosalie Reynolds of 1309 Midland Ave. touched a live vacuum while standing on a floor register and fell. Firefighter Rescue Squad 1, led by Harvey Krick, advised medical checkup and examination for the child after the incident.
Milton Bass of the Division of Employment warned 50 local business officials at the Chamber of Commerce that the new unemployment insurance law could trigger a huge tax bill and potential bankruptcy if firms do not grasp their responsibilities. The sessions are part of a statewide effort to educate employers as 150,000 new businesses enter the system in two years starting this January.
A former Syracuse patrolman with a long record was sentenced to two to four years in Attica State Prison on a second degree grand larceny charge for stealing $251.23 in merchandise from Auburn Tobacco Co. Frank H. Dwyer, 52, pleaded guilty and admitted he had been imprisoned 14 or 15 times since retiring in 1941. Raymond Bova, 26, drew 5 to 10 years in Attica after pleading guilty to first degree grand larceny and second felony offender status.
John Marziale 33 of North Syracuse pleaded guilty to criminal negligence as he faced trial for a May 21 1955 Buckley Road crash that killed Harley Brown 33 of Phoenix. Marziale admitted intoxication and reckless driving after rear ending John North 132. He was hospitalized with head injuries and awaits Nov 3 sentencing before Judge Morse E Ames.
A fox terrier guided Mrs. Lucy Maddy to the drowned body of her 20 month old baby Melody Sue on a farm near Alexandria, Kentucky. The child was found in a pool of rainwater after rainfall on the farm.
Joe Judge sought a restaurant serving smorgasbord to impress his date who loved foreign foods. They checked the telephone directory under Restaurants and Delicatessens then chose from several Swedish options listed in the Yellow Pages.
