Two and a half year old Bobby Zimmerman got his foot stuck in a four inch pipe in front of his home at 421 E Raynor Ave. Emergency water department workers excavated three feet, broke the pipe, and freed his leg. Police and deputies assisted as a crowd watched the successful operation.
The National Production Authority imposes a 25 percent reduction in natural rubber use by tire and rubber firms effective Nov. 1, limiting to 75 percent of the prior 12 month average. A further cut to 63 percent is set for December, with additional limits on total rubber use and latex, and importers must offer at least 10 percent of shipments to federal stockpiles. Synthetic rubber moves to NPA for allocation.
A tropical storm about 300 miles south of New Orleans moves toward northwestern Florida as South Florida reports five deaths and 66 injured with at least 15 million dollars in property damage from Tuesday’s hurricane. Forecasters note Gulf storms often shift speeds and paths and the disturbance, observed four days ago, may strengthen into a hurricane while its center remains poorly defined.

Patrolman George E Checksfield, 31, of 1304 Southay, is gravely injured with a slug in his abdomen after a hunting incident on a country road near Belle Vue Avenue. Deputies seek the shooter while Checksfield undergoes surgery at Onondaga General Hospital. Hunter Chester Jagiello and Harold Tackney aided at the scene. another hunter William Roden admitted firing at a bird.
Edward J. Kelly 74 former Chicago mayor 1933 to 1947 Democratic national committeeman from Illinois died in his Ambassador East Hotel suite. He collapsed on way to a doctor’s office and had recently appeared at Democratic rallies. He branded himself “Boss” and led a powerful political machine.
A truck driver from Denver says a dog riding in the cab pushed the accelerator as the vehicle turned a curve near Pecka causing a collision with a passenger car. Injured were William Wachter 27 and his wife Barbara 19 of Erie Pennsylvania Hollis and his mother in law Mrs Winifred Roode. The dog’s fate was not known.
County Clerk W. Snowdon Smith III clashed with Public Works Commissioner Frank Harmon in a heated exchange at S State and E Onondaga streets over lunch. Smith claimed Harmon should leave the area while Harmon denied being poked. Smith, a Pearl Harbor veteran, referenced personal animosities as onlookers watched the incident unfold.
Three U S prisoners of war escaped a Red torture march from Seoul to Pyongyang and described beatings and killings. They named Air Force Capt William Locke of Enfield Conn F 51 pilot missing since Aug 17 near Waegwan and Lt Alexander Makarou of Lowell Mass captured July 27 and Sgt Takeshi Kumdai of Honolulu captured July 20 at Kaesong.

Four men died when their car was hit by a Santa Fe Railroad passenger train on the outskirts of Lomax New Jersey. UPi reports the collision occurred today and authorities are investigating the fatal incident.

Col. Stanton S. Smith Jr. is removed from command of the fighter unit involved in a strafing raid on a Russian air field near Shky Rechka. The Air Force also grounded two pilots pending charges.
The New York Central Pacemaker rammed a switching engine in Cleveland injuring about 20. The accident followed the North Star crash at Oneida that killed two and injured 18. The Pacemaker hit a switching engine at 10 mph after a signal misread. a waiter and passenger aboard the Pacemaker and the switch engine fireman were held for observation.
