Washington reports that wartime dress controls have been lifted allowing unrestricted design for women's and children's clothing. The CPA notes fall and winter garments are largely finished and no major wardrobe changes are expected, but spring styles may shift with new cutting and design freedom.
Two amateur sleuths, Timothy J. Healy and Robert Raymond, discovered a hidden trunk in the 79 year old recluse Minnie Rosser Weigle s New York apartment containing 469 500 in cash and jewelry. Weigle died August 17 and police found her body two days later in a bathtub. Healy and Raymond, both former Army officers, later assisted as estate attorney and administrator.
Syracuse University football erased a 12-0 deficit to defeat Holy Cross 21-12 in Worcester in what sports writers call one of the Orange’s finest wins in a decade. Other scores include Cornell 6 Colgate 6 and Colgate 47 Kings Point 7 with several regional results noted.
Weather Bureau forecast calls for fair and continued cool today then warmer on Monday. High Saturday around 79 and low 20 records noted from 1936 and 1940. Relative humidity 90 percent at 8 30 P M Saturday.
Victor Rogalla of New Britain Connecticut was indicted by a Copenhagen court on a manslaughter charge after a Danish soldier died when allegedly run down by Rogalla’s vehicle.
Senator Arthur H. Vandenberg urged in a Washington radio interview that peace hinges on mutual rounds of concessions between the United States and the Soviet Union. He called on Russia to fully reciprocate the U S effort to reduce fear and distrust and said the Soviet Union is not today meeting that standard after his return from the Paris peace conference with Secretary Byrnes.
The War Department said it has the support of Harry Bridges in resolving a maritime strike over Army supply movements to Japan and Korea. Bridges, head of the ILWU, wired Seattle locals reaffirming that the national tie-up must not hinder essential military cargo and personnel as determined by the Army.
The Royal Family grew more angry with the Baltimore-born Duchess of Windsor over sensational publicity of a jewel theft. About $80,000 worth of her jewels were stolen and progress toward solving the case was at a standstill as court circles noted lighter front page coverage.
Scotland Yard probed two well groomed women linked to Mayfair society parties as possible accomplices in the 80 000 theft of the Duchess of Windsor jewels. Investigators kept the inquiry secret 72 hours after the incident.
Seventy five war veterans, part of a 3000 strong march on Albany, occupied the Senate chamber and workroom demanding action on G I housing. They lounged in senators chairs and listened to speakers while awaiting Gov. Dewey. The group planned an all night protest with 24 sandwiches provided for their meal. The scene unfolded as Dewey was in nearby Troy on political business.
Gen Dwight D Eisenhower returned from a month long inspection tour of Europe and said he was amazed and elated by the high morale of American forces abroad. Army Chief of Staff Gen Joseph Mc Narney, who flew from Germany, reported excellent discipline and efficiency despite shortages. He added that Ike is satisfied with the situation.
The White House announced President Truman and Mrs. Truman will host a reception for United Nations General Assembly delegates at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City on Wednesday.

Meat promises plentiful supply but at prices above old ceilings. Livestock prices rose despite heavy receipts while cattle and hogs overall trended down.
The Government’s cost of living index climbed roughly ten percent for the three months ending mid September. Prices across major budget groups rose with furnishings and housing leading gains. Food prices excluding meat up about two percent from mid August to mid September, and fish and poultry up about five percent.

Washington agencies plan to lift price controls on bread rolls bakery products flour and likely on breakfast cereals as the opening move in broad decontrol. Yap-rank sources disclosed Saturday the action is practically assured and may extend to other items.
Washington INL November 1969 stabilization director John Br. Steelman announced the revocation of an order for grading and labeling meat as obsolete after meat was decontrolled, ending the regulation tied to price controls.
The Agriculture Department will issue a tentative order Monday denying an industry petition to decontrol bread and other bakery products. Officials say the move is procedural and rests on the belief these items remain in short supply, continuing a broader plan to decontrol all but the scarcest foods. Concluded on Page 12, Column 2.
Recon version Director Steelman approved a 690 million construction program through July 1, 1947 for 14 Federal agencies. Total cost is 300 million less than requested, funding TVA, Veterans Administration, Navy, War, Interior, Agriculture, Justice, State and Treasury, Panama Canal, Maritime Commission, Federal Works Agency, Reconstruction Finance Corporation, and NACA.
