Berlin reports a German torpedo boat flotilla sailed from a continental port and fought a sea engagement off the Isle of Wight with British light forces. Details and outcomes were unclear with multiple British convoy attacks, air defenses, and widespread raids reported by German sources.
London reports four daylight raids by Nazi warplanes after a previous night of scattered attacks on Liverpool and surrounding areas. Americans in Japan started evacuating as Prime Minister Konoye called for national unity during a turning point in Japan’s 2,600 year history. Wives and children left from Yokohama aboard the Empress of Russia, while others sought space on the same liner. A Hong Kong dispatch noted Britain requisitioning a ship to evacuate subjects to Australia, expected around November 4. Konoye spoke at the National Service Association inaugural meeting about the new political structure.
The Manhattan and Washington will be sent to the Far East to evacuate Americans once plans are finalized.
