Syracuse crash injures seven after drunken driver plows crowd

Keith Nelipowitz, 22, of Salina, faces driving while intoxicated charges after his Dodge Ram struck pedestrians outside Area 51 bar at 151 N. Franklin St near North Franklin and West Genesee streets in Syracuse early morning. Seven hospitalized, three with serious injuries. witnesses describe a fast, erratic dash up Franklin Street.

Argentine DC-9 crash kills 75 near Uruguay border

An Austral Airlines DC-9 crashed and exploded near Nuevo Berlin in Rio Negro, Uruguay, killing all 75 aboard. Brig. Vazquez confirmed no survivors. Rescue teams worked the marshy farm site about 280 miles north of Buenos Aires after the plane altered course to avoid a rainstorm. A witness described a ball of fire and a massive explosion. The flight was from Posadas to Buenos Aires with 70 passengers and 5 crew members aboard.

Patchy fog possible late night with a frost risk Sunday morning. Sunstone clouds mix with sun and high near 40s, followed by Monday partly sunny with a high around 67 and low 50, then showers likely Tuesday and more showers Wednesday with highs in the low 50s.

NiMo plan to reshape Niagara Mohawk electricity business

Syracuse utility NiMo submitted to the New York Public Service Commission a plan to sell its non nuclear plants including Oswego Steam Station and about 70 hydro facilities within a year. Large industrial customers would save up to 25 percent, while residential and commercial bills rise modestly about 3.2 percent over three years. 40 percent of light users would see a bill increase. By 1999 every NiMo customer could choose another supplier but NiMo would still deliver power.

Utility plan spurs mixed reactions amid rate shift push

Critics from Citizens Utility Board and Public Utility Law Project opposed the plan which would raise basic residential charges from about 10 dollars monthly to roughly 17.5 thousand. The proposal faces public hearings, written comments, and in-depth review by an administrative law judge before PSC submission.

Birthday cake sparks Tulsa fire alarm at 95th marker

In Tulsa Mabel McCullough turned 95 on Oct 27 with First United Methodist Church women’s group. Her candlelit cake triggered the fire alarm. five engines and two ladder companies responded as Eddi Carlin recalled guests in the doorway and Lonnie Lamb joked about the birthday spark. Firefighters joined for photos but did not stay for cake.
