On Thursday October 0, 1044 Ian Winant spoke on self-preservation against brute force and received an honorary Doctor of Laws and Literature from Edinburgh University, along with the freedom of the city.
The Buffalo Forge Company with $15.47 million in defense orders was struck by GLO steel workers over wage demands plus reinstatement of three discharged union men. The walkout followed a union authorization vote with a 87 to 27 tally and aims for a 10 cent raise in the basic 44 to 50 cent/hour scale.
Reports say the Soo Canal is free of obstruction aiding steel supply for Gulf Coast shipyards. A one day CIO strike at Gary Indiana's Carnegie-Illinois Sheet and Tin Mill ended after officials promised no interference with lawful dues inspections outside the gates.

Great Lakes freighters resumed passage through the St. Marys Falls Canal after workmen cleared obstructions to the main locks. A submerged locomotive was raised from 25 feet of water and the north arm was repaired, freeing half the channel and allowing ships to pass while the remaining lock remained blocked pending further repairs.

Laurence Steinhardt, the U S ambassador to Moscow, is due in Singapore this week as he travels from Moscow to Washington for consultations with President Roosevelt. He plans his first U S trip in 15 months and will likely stay several days in Singapore before taking a transpacific clipper to the United States.
