Kodak to pay $8 million in hazardous waste case

New York Eastman Kodak Co. will pay 8 million dollars and invest tens of millions more in its Rochester manufacturing complex to settle allegations of mishandled hazardous wastes. The EPA found deteriorating sewer lines may have leaked wastes such as methylene chloride and toluene. The 2200 acre plant employs over 20,000 across 400 buildings. The agreement requires upgrading 31 miles of sewers and correcting violations. The settlement aims to improve water in the Genesee River and air in northwestern New York.

Pataki Surges Ahead in Campaign Fundraising for Governor

Albany reports show Republican George Pataki raising over 7.8 million dollars with more than 2 million on hand for the November 8 contest. Governor Mario Cuomo’s team says they have raised over 7.4 million with about 1.9 million in the bank. Billionaire B. Thomas Golisano has sunk nearly 3 million into an independent bid, with expectations to spend up to 10 million of his own money. The race could become the most expensive in state history, with comparisons to the 1982 Cuomo Lehrman contest. Cuomo notes Pataki’s ties to U.S. Sen. Alfonse D’Amato, while Cuomo runs TV ads suggesting Pataki may lack independence from D’Amato.

The bill could shield officers from prosecution while inviting civil suits for human rights abuses, as U.S. troop reductions and UN rolls near.
