San Diego Padres catcher Terry Kennedy leaps into the arms of pitcher Rich Goose Gossage after a 6-3 win over the Chicago Cubs to capture the National League championship in San Diego. The Padres advance to face the Detroit Tigers in the World Series opener next Tuesday.
Airline officials rejected Norway’s claim that a chartered Boeing 707 carrying 200 people veered toward the Kola Peninsula in the Soviet Union on Sept 30 during a Anchorage to Tel Aviv flight. Norway’s safety chief said the plane appeared off course and Norwegian jets escorted it. The flight, with 110 Fiji troops for UNIFIL, landed safely in Tel Aviv after Copenhagen and Amsterdam stops. Airline president George Wray said crew were under radar guidance and not told to head elsewhere. The Kola Peninsula hosts major naval and strategic bases.
In Louisville, Mondale and Reagan faced off for 90 minutes with a handshake and confident exits. Mondale argued Social Security and Medicare were under threat and accused Reagan of deficits and tax cuts for the wealthy.
