The National Weather Service at Hancock Airport forecasts cloudy skies tonight with a chance of rain. Intervals of sunshine tomorrow reduce rain risk to 10 percent with lows near 40 and highs in the mid-50s. Saturday through Monday look cool with daily chances of showers.
State Comptroller Edward V. Regan was on a USAir flight from Albany to Buffalo when Richard Farnsworth allegedly claimed a bomb and attempted to hijack the plane to Moscow. Regan sat a few seats away and passengers exited safely as Farnsworth was arrested in Buffalo.
An 18 year old fugitive linked to the 1980 Bath couple killings has been recaptured in British Columbia. Harry Barnes, who fled Steuben County jail July 30, was arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police on a burglary charge in Penticton. The arrest was confirmed by Steuben County Sheriff Jack Lisi. The report also notes New York lottery results showing number 744 and a quip about bargains.
Conservative mayoral hopeful Melvin N. Zimmer shows no contributions since Sept 10 and only 308.67 in treasury while owing 12,782.27 from his Democratic primary bid to Mayor Lee Alexander. Alexander reports 29,732.62 in contributions since the primary, with 18,500 from five couples or individuals, including enrolled Republicans. Zimmer spokesman Richard Cowden notes fundraising and TV time challenges but says ads recorded pre primary may be replayed. Alexander attracts several large gifts including 5,000 from Robert and Mary Kelly and 1,000 from Henry Panasci, both Republicans. Concluded on Page A2.
Bobby Unser was named the Indianapolis 500 winner after USAC reversed a penalty and awarded the victory on appeal, making him a three time Indy 500 champion. Mario Andretti had originally been credited with the win before the ruling.
Ninth grader Sam Brown, 14, will stand beside former Presidents Carter Ford and Nixon and other leaders at Anwar Sadat's funeral in Egypt. The White House approved his travel aboard Air Force One as part of the U.S. delegation, a dream he has cherished since Sadat’s 1979 visit.
President Reagan wins converts for selling AWACS radar planes to Saudi Arabia as he urges party loyalty and cites Sadat. At least one former opponent joins, with several undecideds now backing the 8.5 billion deal, while Democrats forecast House defeat and a possible veto showdown by November 1.
Mubarak pledged to follow Sadat's policies as he accepted a parliamentary nomination for the presidency. The 53-year-old vice president would be sworn in after a referendum and state funeral for Sadat. Defense officials linked the assassination to four Egyptians led by a revenge-seeking soldier, with no evidence of a broader plot involving the armed forces or foreign powers.
The United States would let the free market allocate gasoline and home heating oil after the Emergency Petroleum Allocation Act expired. Energy official William Vaughan warned of possible price-driven shortages benefiting the wealthy, with government action likely only to aid the needy.
