A two story Geddes Town Hall in Milton ay Solvay was wrecked by a spectacular early morning fire. More than 150 firefighters from Solvay Fairmount and Syracuse fought the blaze for nearly four hours before control was gained at about 6 AM. The Solvay fire was discovered at 2 09 AM.
After a fire destroyed the Third District polling place in Geddes voters must register in the basement of the Village Health Center at Woods Road and Second Street in Solvay.
Minutes later the second floor erupted in flames as fire leaped 25 feet into the air. Fire Chief James B. Costigan ordered aid and summoned two Syracuse companies and one from Fairmount. About 150 volunteers fought the blaze, centered in a rear hall on the building’s second floor at Milton Avenue and Bridgest.

Carl E. Winzeler, a World War II veteran who lost both legs and his right hand, died yesterday in Toledo of a heart attack. Wounded in January 1945 as a supply sergeant during the 10 day siege of Luxembourg.
Vandalism hit Archbold Stadium and campus buildings on Syracuse University grounds after the Syracuse Cornell rivalry clash. Red Cs appeared on multiple structures and a 15 yard by 10 yard patch was burned on the football field. Syracuse athletic director Lewis Andreas and SU administrators voiced cooperation to prevent further acts, while Cornell officials pledged full cooperation to avoid reciprocal vandalism.
About 30 000 to 40 000 Syracusans are expected to register for the November 7 election on the first day. Polling places in Syracuse and Solvay opened at 10 A M and will stay open until 10 P M. Leaders from parties and civic groups sponsor the effort hoping to surpass last year’s registration total of 178 295 and boost first day turnout.
John Kicak, a longtime Syracuse criminal figure, pleaded guilty in County Court to robbery in the first degree and admitted being a second offender. He awaits sentencing on October 11 after a July 26 Bellevue Dairy robbery that netted $148 and left him wounded. He had previously been tied to Sam Amato in 1948 gunfire during a sale burglary.
Dr. Kyle Buchanan an Sydney surgeon settled for 55000 in a case arising from an auto crash near Canandaigua on November 15 1949. The suit against Stokely Foods Inc of Indianapolis cited injuries claiming the wrist ended his career as a surgeon. The federal trial had been scheduled next week.
