In Jackson Michigan rescue work paused after six men were found presumed dead in wreckage of a four story Consumers Power Co building. Fifteen injured as 100 plus workers faced rubble and a fall of concrete and steel from the east wing during construction.

The Sheraton Corporation of America plans to acquire the King George Motel and the DeWitt Ranch Motel from Gregory Banes for more than 3 million dollars. The King George opens on the rotary at Exit 35 Thruway with 150 rooms, modern amenities and a swimming pool. The DeWitt Ranch on Erie Blvd East has 130 rooms and expansion plans including a pool. Ernest Henderson, Sheraton president, is slated to visit Syracuse for the closing coordination. The unusual poultry exhibit at the Northwestern Poultry Producers' convention shows 200 chickens laying about 150 eggs daily, with exhibitors giving eggs to visitors. The report notes the Sheraton's extensive hotel interests and its Boston headquarters.
A Scarsdale patrolman, Charles Ackley, about 32, was shot and killed at 5 05 a m while pursuing a reportedly stolen car in New Rochelle. Residents heard four shots and found Ackley near his patrol car. his revolver remained in holster as authorities searched the area for the assailant. A stolen, wrecked car was found near the scene.
Irving N. Beck of Newport reports all three police patrol cars are in poor condition. He notes one car’s brakes are so bad they would not pass a state safety test.
Commissioner Ford Frick postponed the second World Series game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees due to light rain and threatening weather. The game will be made up Friday at Ebbets Field with fair weather expected and notes the precedent of weather affecting play.
Central New York will see showers today and tonight in the Syracuse area with mild temperatures. A new storm system moves eastward, lowering tomorrow's high to around 60 and bringing cooler, cloudy conditions.
Santa Fe officials announce a sale of buffalo to residents with 500 animals in stock. The NM Game Department plans to offer creatures for 125 to 150 dollars each sourced from Federal refuges to prevent overgrazing of land.
Samuel Lubell, famed political analyst, reports that Republican hopes for a major break in Negro Democratic support are fading. He notes few real shifts toward Eisenhower in five cities, with some gains offset by blacks returning to Democrats in Los Angeles and Detroit. Economic ties to the Democratic Party, not race, drive much of the loyalty. Personal registration begins tomorrow at 12 a.m. in Syracuse and Solway land and other Upstate communities over 5 000 population. Voters must register and then vote, with polls open to 10 p.m. and again Saturday the same hours. Final two days of registration occur next weekend. Republican George L Traister and Democrat John J Young urge immediate registration to avoid missing the vote. Election officials offer assistance at party HQs and the County Election Board.
President Eisenhower announced he would not collect a wager he made with his news secretary James C. Hagerty over the first World Series game. Hagerty, a Yankee fan, had bet on Brooklyn’s 6 to 3 victory, while Eisenhower said he did not intend to collect and noted he had also lost $13 to Labor Secretary James Mitchell.
Eight years ago Mrs. Geraldine Vetter received a three year jail sentence for holding her son's hand over a kitchen flame to stop a theft. Her son Philip Vetter Jr now 16 was arrested Wednesday on charges including stealing an automobile and attempted felonious assault.

Pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated Lout Seales of Jordan was fined $100 and given a 30 day suspended sentence by Judge P. Leo Dorsey in Traffic Court. Seales was arrested Sept. 20 after his car struck a lighted barricade on S Clinton Street. Earl Lyboult, 46, of 400 James Street, also faces charges after his car struck a vehicle driven by Mrs. Rosemary Brush of 124 Kappesser Street following an improper left turn near N Townsend Street and James Street.
South of Oran a fierce clash last night left 23 French soldiers dead, all 21-year-old draftees, in one of the heaviest French losses since the rebellion began nearly two years ago. Algerian rebels reportedly killed 23 Frenchmen with no rebel casualty figures released.
Formosa's provincial government reports the first half rice harvest totaling 906000 metric tons, up 195000 tons from last year’s first half. The prior half-year crop stood at 711060 tons.
655 new polio cases were reported last week across 4T states with Rhode Island not reporting. California led with 74 cases, New York 61, Illinois 58, while seven states and DC reported no new cases. Public Health Service hopes the 1956 total will be about half the 1955 figure.
A time capsule sealed in the Evansville College library cornerstone this week contains a recording of Elvis Presley singing rock and roll. The capsule is to be opened in 2006.
Gov. Harriman asks the Federal Bureau of Public Works to add 453 miles to New York State's interstate network, boosting total from 1,226 to 1,679 miles. The plan would allocate nearly half of national added miles to New York under the highway program, with 90 percent federal funding and 16 percent state share. He notes toll roads like the Thruway would miss federal aid and urges special consideration for the state's needs.
Five people are dead after an Alaska Airlines plane crashed about 15 miles south of Nome while en route from White Mountain to Council during a snowstorm. Investigators say the craft likely struck wires of the Alaska Communications System as it attempted to reach Nome. Victims identified include John Hutchinson, a noted bush pilot, Don Stewart of Council, Buddy Owens of Golovnin, Johnny Kakak of Shaktoolik, and John Blook of White Mountain.
Nine year old George Bryant once a March of Dimes poster boy was found drowned in a Colton creek. His 11 year old friend Lester Stewart confessed to the killing after the boys skipped school to swim. The motive cited includes a laced insult and a disputed show outing.
