President Truman said John Foster Dulles turned down appointment as ambassador to Japan to keep the Republican foreign policy from shifting toward isolationism. The White House disclosed the offer during a news conference.
The 57-year-old Willie Moretti, a self admitted gambler and linked to major racketeering figures, was shot dead at Joe's Restaurant on Palisade Avenue across from Palisades Amusement Park. Witnesses and authorities described the shooting as Moretti stepping into the restaurant with a cashier reported to have seen a man flee. Police quoted a deputy attorney general questioning the cashier as the investigation continued.
Five tank led UN divisions drove up to four miles from their positions in the largest Allied push since truce talks began. Canadian troops in the British Commonwealth Division spearheaded a 40 mile front across western Korea, with the 25th Brigade reaching west of London Hill amid light resistance. Elsewhere, Chinese and North Korean forces offered bitter defense, forcing brief UN withdrawals in parts as the front line held near Yonchon and Charwop.
New York Giants and New York Yankees opened the World Series with the Giants taking a two run edge after a first inning rally. Stanky, Dark and Thompson sparked the early scoring for the Giants while Mantle and Rizzuto produced for the Yankees. Weather forecast warned of possible rain but unlikely to postpone the game.

John Suviec a 56 year old parolee from Oneida Street was tracked by Warren police for three hours after a Sept 22 Commodore Restaurant hold up. He was captured near the Allegheny River with a .29 caliber pistol and a knife. Syracuse police had connected him to another robbery.

Firefighters locked doors to accommodate the crowd. hundreds were turned away while speakers praised the Community Chest achievements and urged continued support to meet the higher goal driven by new WS.O. funding and operating costs.
Magistrate Murphy, citing higher living costs, fined 14 youths five ten and 23 cents each for leaving garbage cans uncovered or smoking in the subway. The day's haul reached $30. He noted his $11,000 yearly salary and three children, saying many struggle to afford basics and soup meat.
