Judge orders NYC to restore welfare to Bronx student
New York state Supreme Court Justice Emily Jane Goodman ordered New York City officials to reinstate welfare benefits for Turhan Butler, a 19-year-old Samuel Gompers High School student who refuses to drop out for a workfare job. Butler, who lives alone, argued that dropping out would cause irreparable harm including starvation and possible criminal activity. The judge noted Butler wants to complete his training and earn a diploma while avoiding welfare dependence.
