Onondaga County could streamline services with a countywide fire department, says the 67 page Onondaga Citizens League report issued Wednesday. The study urges shared governance and possible merges among village and town services to reduce overhead and improve efficiency.
Onondaga County is served by 57 fire departments with about 3,000 volunteers and paid firefighters in 91 stations. The departments own 40 heavy rescue trucks valued around 200 000 dollars each. County dispatchers can summon multiple departments for a single alarm. Fire service advocates oppose eliminating departments and doubt consolidation is feasible.
Lawmakers oppose a 9.6 percent property tax increase urged by County Executive Nicholas Pirro and present a plan to cut county costs.
