Associated Press reports heavy storms sweeping Michigan Wisconsin and nearby states. Detroit freeways submerged and motorists rescued as waters rose with 1.13 inches in Detroit and 8.28 inches in Grand Rapids. Flood warnings spread along the Shiawassee River while northern Illinois and Iowa saw showers and thunderstorms with widespread regional impacts. Temperatures varied from 31 to 81 across the nation with outlooks for mixed showers and sunshine in different regions.
Four shotgun wielding fugitives from an Alabama jail were captured in Cobb County after taking two hostages and wounding a Marietta officer. William Drexler, 20, of Piedmont, Alabama surrendered with others as police dogs and helicopters flushed them from woods. The manhunt drew hundreds of officers from more than a dozen agencies. Hostages George B. Horseley and Randall W. Macinniss escaped unharmed.
