Nowakowski to Get Seat on Council
Edward J. Nowakowski selected to fill the Second District Council vacancy after the death of Richard Grudzinski. He will be voted on at Monday's meeting and then officially appointed to the unexpired term. Nowakowski, 59, a life resident and former Canada Dry employee, was the Democratic majority choice and faces a next election to retain the seat. Other candidates included Cynthia Grudzinski Clarence Kadys and John F. McCarthy.

Two large steel companies, Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel and Armco Steel, announced price increases. Wheeling-Pittsburgh raised flat-rolled steel by six to seven percent. Armco will raise carbon flat rolled sheet and strip steel by about six percent effective December 1.

Mild spell with showers and rising winds forecast
The National Weather Service at Hancock Field reports a brief period of mild weather with winds and showers. Showers or a thunderstorm are 100 percent likely late this afternoon and 80 percent tonight and tomorrow, with tonight’s low in the mid-40s and tomorrow’s high near the mid-50s. Winds will be southeasterly at 15 to 30 mph with higher gusts, followed by a return to cold conditions Sunday with possible flurries and a high of 35 to 40.

East Syracuse man dies in fiery early-morning crash
Ronald Dykeman 25 of East Syracuse died when his car left Kirkville Road in DeWitt collided with an earth embankment and Route 481 overpass pillar then burst into flames. Deputies say he was speeding. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and an autopsy was planned.

Thanksgiving Weekend Traffic Toll Tops 136 Dead
The National Safety Council reported 136 traffic fatalities so far during the Thanksgiving weekend with much of the four-day period ahead. Officials projected total deaths between 450 and 650, similar to a typical holiday period, and noted 403 deaths last year. The worst toll was 764 in 1968.

Niagara Mohawk to raise electric and gas base charges
Niagara Mohawk Power Corp filed new rate schedules with the State Public Service Commission showing base increases for both electric and gas customers. The changes, effective December 20 if approved, include a total electric rate rise of 52.89 million and gas rate rise of 10.798 million, with readings subject to PSC adjustments. Affected bills would rise at various usage levels, such as a 6000 cubic foot gas user paying 18.47 versus 15.46 now, and a residential 22000 cubic foot user rising to about 50.55 from 40.08, plus purchased gas adjustments. Electric blocks shift upwards with higher charges per kilowatt hour and monthly minimums, while general and industrial rates include demand calculations and higher rates for small general users.

Three FBI agents shot during Newark bank raid probe
Three FBI agents were wounded during a stakeout thwarting a bank robbery at Wood-Ridge National Bank in Wood-Ridge New Jersey. One robber was killed at the car wheel, another wounded, and a third arrested on bank robbery charges.
