Severe coastal storm hammers New York area with deaths and flood

Steady 83 mph winds and heavy rain drove seas a mile inland around New York City and along the Eastern seaboard from Virginia to New England. At least two people died in weather-related incidents including a man struck by a car in New York City and another killed by a falling tree in Bloomfield New Jersey. Abnormally high tides flooded lower Manhattan and damaged media buildings while rail lines and airport towers faced disruption. Ten people were rescued from collapsed cottages on Staten Island as buses ferried passengers between Matawan and Perth Amboy. Continuous winds reached up to 96 mph at Bear Mountain as warnings predicted snow flurries later.

Woman Shot as Hunters Seek Mad Gunman In Philly

In Philadelphia a 31 year old bookkeeper Gladys Audy was shot in the hip while walking with her mother near a bus stop. Police fear a mad gunman is on the loose after a third shooting in two days. Earlier a rookie police officer's wife was wounded and later a 15 year old boy was shot in the hand at another intersection.

Hepburn in Court Over Mink Coat Blaze

Actress Katharine Hepburn, en route to Wichita for a performance, caused a minor court scene after a highway patrolman ticketed her chauffeur for speeding. The incident ended with a $10 fine for the driver and Hepburn defending her $5,500 mink coat as it was singed in a courtroom stove mishap.

Two Killed In Highway Accidents In Onondaga County

Two people died in separate highway crashes. Charles J. Hawker, 20, of Clay, died when his car left N Main Street in North Syracuse and struck a tree. He was a Sea Scout leader and survived by his parents and sister. Howard Hill, 65, of the Onondaga Reservation, was struck on Route 11A near Nedrow by a car driven by Andrew Pierce after being blinded by oncoming lights. Hill's wife and four children survive. Pierce will be questioned by the district attorney.
