Albany New York health commissioner Dr. David Axelrod announced a state task force to investigate why Caesarean section births keep increasing after a Health Department study found nearly one in four New York births are C-sections.
An Ames Department store assistant manager in Geneva discovered a small fire at closing time and extinguished it. Fire officials call the incident suspicious as it follows four fires at Ames locations in 10 days, with arson suspected in Auburn and prior major blazes at Grant Avenue and nearby Binghamton and Syracuse stores.
Cuban inmates who seized a federal prison refused to release any of the 75 hostages despite a deportation delay offer. Reports say as many as six died after Monday's uprising in Atlanta with a new blaze and helicopters circling the facility. At least 12 injured, eight hospitalized, five with gunshot wounds. conditions vary, and additional Cuban inmates paraded two hostages in Louisiana.
A strong California earthquake cracked windows and rattled items as far as Las Vegas, felt from Menlo Park to Berkeley. Centered 14 miles northwest of Westmorland, it prompted a low level emergency at a San Onofre plant about 100 miles away. Traffic lights failed in Westmorland and El Centro as aftershocks followed a foreshock, with no major damage reported.
A Ryan Air Beechcraft 1900 crashed after clipping a fence while attempting to land at Homer Airport. Fourteen aboard died at the scene and two later perished. Five others were injured as responders rushed victims to hospital. Investigators from Alaska and Washington arrived to inspect the wreck.
Paroled rapist Philip J. Guinta Jr. 45 of Southwood was charged with second degree murder in the strangulation of Susan Graff 35 during a dinner date in Adams. Autopsy showed sexual assault. investigators searched a Seneca County landfill for evidence. Guinta, released Oct 13 after serving two thirds of a 14 to 45 year sentence for first degree rape, had prior rape-related convictions.
