The Patton case centered on an incident with a shell shocked private in Sicily. General Patton faced criticism for his treatment of the soldier but apologized in public, an act welcomed by officers and men. The War Department supported him staying in command, praising his leadership and discipline while stressing accountability for actions.
Federal agents, aided by city police, raided 36 New York City bars and taverns in Manhattan Brooklyn and the Bronx. Thirty six arrests were made for conspiracy and evading internal revenue laws as agents described a bootlegging ring supplying high quality alcohol. Leaders named include Jake Kessler Isadore Jaffe Jack Sahiff and Isidore Schimmel.
Undersecretary James C. Forrestal told 1,200 at a renegotiation meeting that the Navy doubled its combat fleet in 1943. He cited starting the year with the goal to match the number of ships in service on January 1 and called the achievement miraculous while noting the war would continue through 1947 with a construction program about 33,000 ships greater than this year.
