Mrs. Virginia B. Markey sought a divorce from Peter Markey claiming he returns from block captain duties with rouge on his collar and frequent intoxication. She argued this conduct unsuitable for his public role.
Mexico City November 24. Employees of the Southern Pacific of Mexico Railroad served notice of intent to strike in 10 days unless a 10 percent wage increase is granted. Wells Fargo handling freight was served a similar notice. Federal Board of Conciliation and Arbitration called both sides to hearings to avert a tieup that could impede shipment of war minerals from Northwest Mexico to the United States.
New York reports mixed reactions to President Roosevelt's plan to reuse dried coffee grounds for a second cup. Notable voices from the Gourmet Society and Coffee Association deride the idea as inferior, preferring fresh or preserved leftovers, with Mayor La Guardia and others offering light, skeptical quips.
Adirondack iron production will rise as private and government efforts reopen and develop mines. Output is projected at 9 to 10 million tons annually, with 500 million to 1 billion tons of ore in the region. Aboard a British warship in the Mediterranean on November 19 the report describes British and American long range patrol planes and ships fighting to stop Axis evacuees from North Africa. Junkers 52 transports skimmed the waves toward Italy while Stuka and Allied fighters exchanged attacks as weather aided the German effort. The outcome is unclear but Allied air and sea cooperation hindered the transports.
U S Army Air Forces and Royal Air Force bombers attacked the German submarine base at St Nazaire France. Fifteen German fighters were destroyed and four bombers were lost in the daylight raid near the Loire estuary. The joint communique noted many bursts on the target and the effort followed seven forays this month with 20 missions since mid August.
The War Production Board directed canners to reserve about 6.3 million cases of canned citrus fruits and juices for the armed forces and lend-lease. Quotas vary by product, from 19 percent for grapefruit segments to 100 percent for blended orange grapefruit juice, covering Florida Texas Arizona packs Aug 1 1942 to July 31 1943 and California pack Dec 1 1942 to Nov 30 1943.
