Denver crash ends flight with 26 dead 56 injured

Investigators study debris from a Continental Airlines DC-9 that veered during takeoff in a snowstorm at Stapleton International Airport. The jet carried 82 aboard when it broke into three pieces and crashed, killing 26 and injuring 56. Witnesses describe the right wing dropping and the plane veering left and right before impact.

Plane crash witness at Stapleton recalls five second slide

Navy Lt Curtis Renfro, an aviation maintenance officer, watched the Continental crash from a parallel runway. She says the flight lasted five to six seconds and the plane tilted as the pilot overcompensated. The black box was recovered for investigators as Kevin Fieming notes about an eighth inch of wet snow on the runway but normal storm conditions for Stapleton.

Tornado Toll Rises Across Texas and Louisiana

National Guardsmen aided Palstine and surrounding towns as tornadoes swept 200 miles, killing 10 and injuring 207. Thirteen twisters hit from east-central Texas near Austin to Tyler and into Louisiana, with 9 killed and 162 hurt in Texas and 1 killed and at least 45 injured in Louisiana. A central weather watch remained in effect as crews restored services.

Nursing home bills push New York seniors toward poverty

A congressional study finds after 13 weeks in a nursing home seven of ten elderly New Yorkers would drop to poverty on income alone, with 95 percent of unmarried seniors and 77 percent of couples facing impoverishment over a year of bills. The report highlights the high cost of long term care and bids for federal relief as Congress debates reform.

Iranian speedboats attack U.S. tanker and vessels in Gulf

In the southern Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, Iranian speedboats attacked the Esso Freeport and the Greek flagged Filikon L, damaging none and injuring none. A Liberian tanker Lucy was reported attacked near Dubai. The incidents follow Iraqi reports of strikes near the Iranian coast as Iraq goes to full alert.
