Six North Syracuse Education Association officials received ten day jail terms and $250 fines for contempt in state court. The judge fined the association $15,000 for willful disobedience after a two week strike ended by a contract settlement.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse announces the retirement of Most Rev David F Cunningham and the elevation of Most Rev Francis J Harrison as the seventh bishop. Harrison, 64, native Syracuse, will be installed after dates coordinated with church offices.
Weatherman at Hancock Airport says precipitation stays near zero through tomorrow so ski slopes stay quiet. Tonight will be mainly clear with a low around 30 but mid 20s in valleys. Convicted killer Gary Mark Gilmore reportedly tried to kill himself with a drug overdose at the Utah State Prison. Police said Gilmore’s girlfriend was found unconscious in Springville in an apparent overdose.

The State Public Service Commission approved Niagara Mohawk Power Corp rate increases far below the company’s requests. Electric rates rise 6.2 percent to $52.89 million and gas rates 5.8 percent to $19.8 million, with a 7–0 vote. Company officials say earnings erosion continues and full effects will take months to assess. Bills to customers begin next month.
