The largest electric blackout in history left 12 hours of chaos for millions in New York City and across the Northeast and Canada. Power was restored across 80,000 square miles after the blackout, revealing the nation’s fragile electric grid.
A major Northeast blackout hit Syracuse Onondaga County at 5:22 p.m. disrupting rush hour. Power returned downtown by 6 15 p.m. and gradually citywide by 9 p.m. No deaths or serious injuries. few accidents and fires. hospitals faced circuit failures but none critically affected. Police and fire units responded with help from East Syracuse Civil Defense police and local volunteers.
A major power outage left thirty million people without electricity from Ontario to southern Pennsylvania. The outage spread through eight states and parts of Canada, with New York City plunged into darkness for twelve hours before power was restored to the UPI bureau in Manhattan.
Syracuse University expert Lowell Lingo of the College of Engineering predicts computers will unravel the Northeast blackout mystery. He notes the power system was unstable and that automatic recording equipment from all electrical firms will be studied, pieced together, and fed into computers to yield an explanation.

In midtown Manhattan, residents with electric clocks did not reset them as the power outage lasted from 5:28 p.m. yesterday until 5:28 a.m. today. The incident affected the east side of midtown.
