Explosion at Phillips refinery lights up Kansas City sky
A major blast at the Phillips Petroleum Co. refinery in Kansas City Kansas caused a fire visible for miles. Firefighters remained on scene since the 12:15 a.m. explosion and by midmorning were monitoring the flames as they burned out. No injuries were reported. Richard Pierce Phillips director of administration described the bright glow.

Two Die From Possible Carbon Monoxide Poisoning
Autopsies scheduled for two people found dead in a 1964 station wagon on a dirt road in the Town of DeWitt indicate carbon monoxide poisoning. Howard Haynes, 54, a boarder at Eve lyn Brezee’s home, and Brezee, 50, were pronounced dead at the scene with ignition on and no fuel in the tank. Authorities said they were last seen Saturday night. the car was discovered by Brezee’s relatives around 5 p.m. near Benedict Road and Kirkville Road.

First Snow Causes Accidents Across Area
Nearly two inches of snow turned area roads slippery sparking dozens of minor injuries and property damage crashes. A trailer carrying nine horses flipped on Route 81 near Tully, closing northbound lanes for over two hours but none of the animals was hurt. A four car crash near Route H and Old Route 31 in Van Buren prompted further investigations as state police logged multiple weather related crashes. Public works crews operated all night for ice control with 14 salt spreaders citywide and county crews deploying 29 sanders and plows plus a grader. Northern areas saw the worst conditions with four to six inches by early today as forecasters warned of treacherous roads.

Quakes Hit China Philippines and Iran in Wide Tremor Sweep
United Press International reports a 6.3 magnitude quake struck 205 miles northwest of Kunming Yunnan with tremors felt across southwest China and the southern Philippines. Iran’s Khorasan province reported 17 dead and 260 injured in yesterday’s quake, the worst since the eight year prior deadly sequence.
