Amsterdam reports mayor Arthur Carter, injured, saved 21 year old Mrs Henry Jacobson from fire at a dance. Panic ensued as two men attempted to beat out the flames. Carter wrapped his coat around the woman and fell, injuring his back while restraining the fire threat.
Elmira residents faced traffic safety patrols as over 2,000 Boy Scouts distributed tickets in Elmira's business district. The voluntary scheme, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, labeled pedestrians who crossed at risky places as jaywalkers.
A heavy gale dumped up to a foot of snow along the East Coast causing slick roads and numerous crashes. Saranac Inn reports a foot of snow while Saranac Lake, Malone and Monticello saw several inches. One train crash at Plattsburg killed two 19 year olds. four others injured. Washington November 6 Republicans launch an extensive study of the New Deal reciprocal trade agreement program. A 46 member committee led by Representative Clifford R Hope will supervise with eight executives. Sub committees on major commodities will be announced next week. Minority Leader Joseph W Martin Jr plans another panel on industrial aspects. Hope’s panel is expected to supply ammunition for GOP attacks.
Emerson Turney, 26, of Albany was injured when a skidding car crashed through his bedroom wall yesterday. He suffered a back injury but is recovering after the unexpected intrusion and yesterdays mishap.
In a dramatic sea rescue near Spain, the freighter Independence Hall saved 300 passengers from two torpedoed ships, including 127 Hindus. Panic, violence, and injuries followed as English crews used force to control chaos aboard the Yorkshire and Mandalay survivors. two deaths were reported at sea.
Washington reports the 1939 federal wheat crop insurance ran at a net loss with 6,679,120 bushels in premiums from 165,551 farmers and 9,461,730 bushels paid out or pending payment. Police describe the case of David J. Jenkins 69 and his invalid daughter Mrs. Florence Covert 40 as mercy killing and death by his own action. Mrs. Covert, bedridden after illness, was found shot in her bed. The husband Stanley Covert 43 returned home to discover the bodies. A neighbor recalled a prior plea for a gun and death.
Lois Weber, 56, longtime writer and director in the film industry, is gravely ill in Hollywood from a stomach ailment of long standing. Dr. Leeland Chapman described her condition as serious.
